About Sargassum: What to Expect
Sargassum is a type of free-floating seaweed that occasionally washes up along the shores of Belize and much of the Caribbean, including Central America and the eastern coast of Mexico. It’s part of a larger natural phenomenon carried by ocean currents—often influenced by factors like water temperature, wind patterns, and tides. While it plays a vital role in marine ecosystems offshore, it can sometimes gather along beaches, especially during certain weather conditions. That said, sargassum is not seasonal or predictable, and its presence can vary day to day—even hour to hour.
Our team works hard to keep our beachfront beautiful, with daily clean-up efforts designed to minimize the impact of sargassum. However, as a force of nature, it can sometimes arrive faster than we can remove it. Please know that we do not offer discounts or refunds due to sargassum—as it is beyond our control and affects the entire region. We invite you to explore everything else that makes Placencia unforgettable—sparkling pools, inland adventures, world-class tours, and authentic Belizean hospitality—no matter what the sea brings to shore.
Belize is a tropical destination and we do have mosquitoes and no-see-ums.
No-see-ums are
We do spray for mosquitoes frequently, but we cannot eliminate them and you’ll definitely experience them on your inland excursions. OFF (or another product with DEET) is the best deterrent against mosquitoes.
No-see-ums are different – instead of piercing skin like a mosquito, they actually bite. The best deterrent against them is Avon’s Original Skin So Soft oil. Apply it liberally on exposed skin, especially feet, ankles, and lower legs and reapply throughout the day. No-see-ums are most active around dusk, so staying inside during those hours also helps.
No-see-ums and mosquitoes are not “seasonal” in Belize, although we do see more and less active times. There is no way to predict activity, so being prepared is the best defense.

We recommend booking excursions and activities in advance – and our Guest Experience Designers make that process simple and stress free. About six weeks prior to your arrival, you will have the opportunity to schedule a call with your Designer. They can answer any questions about excursions, spa services, specialty dining – anything you’d like to do during your stay. Having everything confirmed prior to arrival means less decision fatigue and more relaxation!
If you’re a “wing it” kind of traveler, you can book excursions while on property. From November – May, you risk tours being sold out in advance. And in the slow season (September – early November), you risk tours not meeting the minimum number of guests to go out. Booking in advance helps guard against both situations.
We work exclusively with our sister company, Captain Jak’s, for all excursions and golf cart rentals.
Official check-in is 3:00 pm and checkout is 11:00 am. Early check in / late check out may be available; please check with your Guest Experience Designer prior to arrival to confirm.

Getting Here
All international guests fly into Phillip Goldson International Airport in Belize City (BZE). From BZE to Placencia, you have a couple of options:
Local flights: There are two local airlines in Belize (Tropic Air and Maya Island Air). Flights from BZE to Placencia are about 30 minutes on a 14 seat plane. While we are agents for both airlines, we generally book with Tropic. Typically, round trip airfare is $275 USD per person. However, fares are not guaranteed until booked. If you choose this option and your airfare will be more than $275 USD per person, round trip we will confirm with you before booking. If we book the flight, you pay for it when you check out from the resort and we manage any changes (if your US flights are delayed, you get held up in immigration/customs, etc.). Then we pick you up at the Placencia Airstrip and it’s about a 15 minute drive to the Resort.
Alternatively, you may book directly with Tropic or Maya and then share your arrival time with us. We offer a complimentary pick up at the Placencia Airstrip. However, if you are delayed or need to make any changes, you must work directly with the airlines. They will not discuss your flights with us unless we book them. Changes or cancellations may also be subject to fees if you book directly.
Ground transfer: We also offer a ground transfer option. We are located about 110 miles south of the international airport. Our vans will pick you up at the airport and drive you down. Unless otherwise requested, this transfer is via the Coastal Highway, which was recently updated (2024). It’s about a two-hour drive on this route, and you’ll be comfortable in our 10- or 15-passenger, air conditioned, well maintained vans. This option is $550 USD round trip for the first 4 people, plus $15 per additional person.
You can drive one way and fly the other – this is also a popular option. For this option, the ground transfer is $300 for the first 4 people plus $15 per additional person and the flights are $140 USD per person.
*All rates are subject to change until booked.
